Donald Trump has pledged to reduce American funding to the United Nations. I doubt that sentence bothered most conservatives. Considering that America is the country that donates the most to the United Nations, which feeds the starving and protects the abused, this world is about to become a lot more “un-Christian”. Most people who call themselves members of “the religious right”, would gladly ignore the callous degradation of humanity, as long as a republican is to blame.
America has always been the leader of the world. As a result, we have gained some of our greatest allies. For almost one hundred years, America’s diplomatic leadership has unified most of the world. The last world war, for example, we fought Japan and Germany. Now, those two countries are our greatest allies. Despite the fact that they bombed us and shot us down, we offered them our other cheek and offered them a helping hand. Trump however, asserted during the campaign, that Japan and Germany need to start paying us a lot more for our protection services.
Last year, according to the U.N. Foundation, the US spent $9 billion on the United Nations, more than any other country. Quite ironic that Japan and Germany are second and third on that list. Apparently, the generosity of America is contagious. Other countries have followed our lead in helping the impoverished. America might give the most to the United Nations but still, that figure is only about 0.1 percent of the total U.S. federal budget, Washington Post article.
The republican party has become an institution built entirely out of hypocrisy and irony.
- Donald Trump’s budget removes complete funding for social programs that feed and educate and help citizens. Millions of people will lose health insurance under Trumpcare. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is the wealthiest president our country has ever had.
- Republican voters unanimously supported removing funding for global programs like Unicef and United Nations. Also, they voted to cut social programs like welfare. Meanwhile, Republican states BY FAR use up more federal welfare, IJR article.
Threatening to remove funding for United Nations is a serious thing.
“We’re absolutely reducing funding to the U.N. and to various foreign aid programs,” White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said during a news conference Thursday, according to Fox News. When asked by how much, he replied simply: “A lot.” Washington Post article
Trump pledged to his supporters that if he became president, he’d take the foreign aid and spend it instead, on us. Very effective appeal to make on a presidential campaign, especially if your base is uneducated. Like offering a chimpanzee two bananas instead of one. A very primitive urge in our brain will always be compelled to prefer more.
Again, it is very simple to say, ‘Don’t ship that money over seas! Lemme have some.’ Such a statement ignores the immeasurable benefits the United Nations has brought to our world.
The UN was established in 1945. Since then, it has saved millions of lives and fed countless people. The UN has provided education to millions of children as well, including the current United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon.
It is amazing how much just one man can ruin our world.
