How will the death of our democracy transpire? A democracy is supposed to be by the people and for the people. According to this definition, a democracy should never die. The people are not governed by greed and power. How can we govern ourselves poorly? If I am an island, every decision I make will be for my prosperity. In the same sense, if we govern ourselves, our path will be brimming with abundance. If we govern ourselves, we can not be corrupted. I don’t want to steal from myself. Democracy is a beautiful institution. Though, as we are sadly witnessing, nefarious intent could instantly unravel centuries of gain.
Abraham Lincoln said,
America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
Until recently, I have never pondered the death of our democracy. Every where I look now, I see another monument of our democracy crumbling into ashes. I always thought that the Statue of Liberty signified everything this country represents. My grandparents used to tell me how they sailed across the ocean for months. Finally, outside their foggy port hole, they behold this spectacular lady, greeting them to their new home.
Mounted beside her reads,
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Millions of pioneers across the world swelled with inspiration as they heard those words. When you can’t provide food for your family or you fear another beating from the dictator’s guards, those words instilled hope. Somewhere, a life free of hardship awaits.
For the first time in our short history, our president tells us to ignore this humble inscription. That impoverished family living beneath tyranny across the world, used to dream about coming to America. Trump has dashed those dreams against the rocks. Now, those borders are closed to them, and any other pilgrim thirsty for a new life. America used to be their only salvation. Because of Trump, they will be forced to remain in their autocracy.
Because of Trump, the same guy that just a year ago was the defendant in a class action for stealing tuition money from the hands of little children, these immigrants must die in tyranny.
If we are a country of immigrants, the death of our democracy will occur when immigrants are banned. Trump’s campaign was focused on the hatred of foreigners, especially Middle Easterners. In fact, Trump tried to ban a few nations from entering our country, Iran being one. However, according to my article,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) did a study about the education levels of certain ethnic groups in America. The study found that more than one in four Iranians hold a Masters degree or a doctorate. This statistic makes Iranians the most highly educated group in America. President Trump has authorized executive actions banning Iranians from our country.
The president was trying to ban the most educated and productive ethnicity from our country. Why? Not so much, to appease his base. Rather, to appease the hatred that he planted in his base. What a clever campaign trick. Trump undoubtedly learned that by studying Hitler, which his ex-wife said he did religiously, BusinessInsider. Hitler also convinced his people to fear a certain ethnicity. To them, electing Hitler was the only solution to this contrived problem. Just like electing Trump was the only solution to his contrived immigration problem.
Our democracy was dying before Trump even stepped into the White House. Look how ineffective our government is. Trump says he would sign anything democrats or republicans put in front of him. But the next day he refused to sign anything, and the government plunged into a shut-down.
Remember when Mitch McConnell said,
The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
What did he mean? He was elected by the people, to produce legislation to improve their lives. Instead, McConnell just obstructed everything. McConnell was vowing to block every single piece of legislation Obama tried to pass. In the end, he gets a phat pay check. The voters are the ones that get douched. The voters are the losers when the government doesn’t work. Nothing gets accomplished. Democracy is not being served here.
The death of our democracy will occur when the government favors the elite over the masses. Republicans are the party of money. Big corporations just have to break out their check book to persuade republican politicians into sculpting beneficial legislation. Look at how republicans draw up their voting districts, with the objective of silencing the masses. Representation is why we vote, so that every citizen has a voice. I wrote this article last week, about how a North Carolina state court ruled to redraw their maps so everyone’s vote is equal. However, the Supreme Court actually blocked North Carolina’s vote, and told them to wait. Other states are trying to rectify their maps as well. Hopefully, the Supreme Court will not block all of them.
Supreme Court make up, mind you, is another travesty in our democracy. Justice Antonin Scalia died in Obama’s term. As the history of our country dictates, Obama was supposed to elect the next judge. Republicans crossed their arms and threw a fit and refused to allow Obama his rightful choice. And then, Russia fooled our nation’s uneducated with fake news about Hillary Clinton. Once in office, Trump eagerly put a republican in the Supreme Court.
This is not democracy folks.
We are starting to resemble those same dark figures we have battled in the past. One of the first measures of the Trump administration was to restrict scientists at the EPA from releasing information before it gets reviewed by political appointees. As a result, Australia’s chief scientist compares Trump to Stalin. EcoWatch
Trump’s will to manipulate scientific information before it goes to the public is the antithesis of a democracy. If my president is secretly hiding information that shows how much his wealthy friends are destroying our planet, that should enrage everyone.
As we deliberate the death of democracy, it is appropriate to recollect it’s birth. It certainly has been a long and strange trip. Our founding fathers might have created democracy, but the French Revolution put an end to monarch rule. As a result, the French Revolution is considered the single most important event in recorded history.
The End of Tyranny
The French king claimed to rule by the will of god. As Louis XVI said, “This thing is legal because I wish it.” The King made war and peace, he levied taxes and he censored the press. The King’s decisions were considered divine. The queen had 500 servants, 1,900 horses and more than 200 carriages. All of this, in the Palace of Versailles – the envy of every European ruler. The peasants paid for it all in their taxes. The French caste system before the revolution was divided into three groups: church, nobility and everyone else. The first two paid no taxes. Erenow
Our democracy is old and sick. She is sitting on that bench, catching her breath. Our democracy is so tired. She thinks it is about time to lay her head on her savior’s breast, and say goodnight.
